Large Garden Pond

Large Garden Pond

This is a 4000 litre pond, about 4 metres in diameter, 1.5 metres deep.

Because the blocks are not curved and do not fit square, the wall required 2 bags of strong fibres to fill out the wall with a 3 to 1 sand and cement mortar mix.

Two bags of strong fibres were used on the first scratch coat of render, 5mm thick with a 3 to 1 sand and cement mortar mix.

Two bags of strong fibres were used on the second scratch coat, this coat was also 5mm thick and applied on top of the first coat on the same day, with a 3 to 1 sand and cement mortar mix.

The scratching is only done back to the first coat, not back to the blocks.

Let it set overnight.

There are three choices at this stage of the pond construction:

  1. A final coat of render can be applied with a 2 to 1 sand and cement mortar mix. Strong or fine fibres can be used. The pond is now waterproof and can be filled with water in 48 hours. the pond will dry the colour light grey unless a cement pigment is added to the final coat.
NOTE: Always fill a new cement rendered pond with water and let it stand as long as possible, then empty the pond, refill, and test the water before putting any fish in the pond.
  2. A final coat can be applied using a 3 to 1 sand and cement ratio. Strong or fine fibres can be used. the pond can then be painted when dry with a waterproof pond paint.
NOTE: Strong fibres cannot be rubbed smooth with a sponge, but they can be smoothed with a steel trowel.
  3. A final coat of render with a 3 to 1 sand and cement mortar mix. Then a glass fibre liner can be professionally installed.
